Dr. Donald and Barbara Potts Fund Donate Don and Barbara Potts have always been supporters of Truman Heartland because they know first-hand how much good can come from Community Foundations. Don being a retired doctor and Barbara a former Mayor of Independence, have both invested in the growth and development of their community. Barbara says, "We don't have wealth by traditional standards but rather by experience and our foundation is an opportunity for us to give back to a community that has given us so much." Don and Barbara have a deep passion for their community and want to continue to support area charities beyond their lifetime. "Our children live elsewhere and have different interests. The Community Foundation understands what we want to continue supporting, and they have the integrity and knowledge to direct our funds after we're gone."

Elias Family Charitable Fund Donate The journey began five years ago for Jim Elias, with a trip to Zambia, Africa to assist in providing dental care to the locals. It was evident that there was a need dentally as well as spiritually, to the people of the Zambia community, thus a fund was set up to pursue what Jim Elias considers God's greatest commandment: "Love and help one another." With a bit of encouragement and education on personal foundations from Dr. Paul ThomsonTHCF staff, the Elias Family Charitable Fund was established, and now sponsors others in missions and dental students in the dental field. Jim describes the Community Foundation as giving him? the biggest bang for his buck? as well as provide the means for his missions to continue on. "God put us here to help one another. Anyone can do something, and make a difference."

And Fred and Marge Hahn have given much to their community. Through their own charitable fund at THCF, the Hahns are able to support the many charities they care about."We also like the concept of leaving a legacy." With plans to continue supporting their favorite charities, Dr. Hahn shares, "We have made provisions in our IRA for the transfer of a certain amount to our fund at the Community Foundation upon our death. Percentages will then be disbursed from our fund to benefit church, schools and organizations to be determined as we go along." For the Hahn family, "The Donor-Advised Fund allows more flexibility in our plans for the future while we are still living and allows us to modify our own program. It?s also an affordable fee."

Jim and Mary Stilley Donor Advised Fund Donate Jim Stilley, 30th Anniversary Video interview Chairman during 06-07 ? but that was his ninth year on the board Involved for about ten years ? 95-96 through 06-07 I got to meet a lot of other people from eastern Jack that I probably wouldn't have ever met. Other board members were just outstanding, and I made some really long-lasting friends. I felt like the board on this foundation doesn't seem to have any ulterior motive or other agenda - everybody's really on the same page with cultivating private giving from the private good. I've always considered THCF as kind of the charity's charity. We've been able to offer a lot of services to small tax-exempts that a lot of other people can't. And in terms of other non-profit giving - meeting individual's goals in terms of charitable giving. That annual gala is so important because it just brings so many people together throughout the area. No auctions or anything, just honoring people - a truly enjoyable evening.

Humanitarians and Citizens of the Year ? cities, business leaders The other thing that?s happened is we have satellite communities ? BS, LS, Raytown ? it?s truly a regional force

Magady Family Education Fund Donate Manne and Nola Magady have been long-time residents and educators of Lee's Summit. Manne, a graduate of Lee's Summit High School, taught for 32 years in Lee's Summit schools. Wife Nola taught English for 20 years and helped form the English as a Second Language (ESL) program for the district in 2001. Both have since retired from their careers as educators but continue to support their community through active service and charitable giving. "When Nola retired, she began working with parents of ESL students to conduct evening training," Manne recalls. And for the last twelve years, Manne has served on the school board as well as serving an active role on the THCF-Lee's Summit advisory council. In 2006, Manne established the Magady Family Education Fund for his wife as a birthday gift. "Our charitable fund primarily supports education. It allows us to grant small scholarships to ESL kids that want to attend a formal trade school or other advanced training. THCF was an easy choice for us, knowing their success in providing grants and addressing needs in the Kansas City area. After serving on the THCF-Lee's Summit advisory council, we knew we wanted to create a family fund to support our charitable interests as we got older." The Magady Family Education Fund is one more way the Magady family has chosen to invest in the lives of Lee's Summit students. They continue to make a significant difference in the future of their community.

McCandless 30th Anniversary Video interview: Free Health Clinic ? about 2 or 3 years ago, it became independent, but we?re still intricately involved - Dr. Hahn was a big help on that. Our YAC kids come back and help serve the community. SUMMARY: If nothing else is accomplished, emphasize the students, the economic ring is more evident there I very much like the evolution over the years ? we went from a piddly thing to our influence now

Paul and Marilyn Thomson Family Fund Donate Paul Thomson 30th Anniversary interview notes: Executive director: July of 99 ? until September 30, 2009 I was in higher education ? I was the founding president of Blue River Community College. So about the time the Foundation was looking for a new President/CEO, I was eligible for retirement in the college system. I turned it down the first time, and then after 6 months or so, they came back to me, so I said yes in July. During those years, from my perspective, it was a time of great expansion and asset development. You probably know a little of the history, I?m sure, that the Foundation started as a one-town thing, and a volunteer-run organization. Bob was such a marketing dynamo. He did a good job. When I came, the board had elected to change the named to Truman Heartland, but it was still pretty much a local phenomenon. Assets were just under $5 million ? so my job was to take ICF up to a regional serving foundation. That eventually became western Missouri. Including Jackson County excluding KC proper and including all the contiguous counties to Jackson. Word spread mostly through donors wanting to participate. Jim Stilley was chair of the board, and as an attorney, he was very helpful in getting the articles of incorporation re-done to include all the areas. One way was to make subsidiary foundations to support their own communities but also regional interests as well. We also opened our second office ? we had one in Lee?s Summit and then a tiny one here on the fifth floor. Thank Goodness Phil got them consolidated! We had to be able to respond to a larger geographic area. So we had to completely restructure the organization. We put in all new software programs, all new policies, and chose new investment areas. We needed to rebuild and expand every area to serve more people. After that, we could focus more on asset building. One of the ways that we look at the capacity of the Foundation to serve is through how much money its holding in terms of the numbers of people who have charitable funds with us. We had about 50 funds when started. When I retired, it was 550 funds. That collectively was about $35 million. That meant our grant-making capabilities increased. When we first came, we were doing 30-40 k a year in grants. Toward the end, it was becoming a couple of million dollars a year (between us and things we funded that gave out their own grants). Our total assets must be looked at in two categories: current gifts ? opening a fund to give through. Then there are planned gifts - in the estate, for example, there is money that will be given to the Foundation when we pass away. During that time, we raised about 120 illion in charitable money. About 60 was in planned gifts. About 20 was in life insurance policies purchased so that the death benefit would come to THCF on their death. In 2009, we had assets of about $25 million. SO it was a time of geographic expansion and exciting asset growth. We also started YAC ? we wanted the next generation to understand what our mission was. Whether they worked at a nonprofit or not, at least they would understand this sort of philanthropy. We made a large commitment to that. We were fortunate to have Nicole Stevens ? and we showed them how to make their own grants. It?s real world work for them. So that was wonderful. Something that?s become well known is the galas. That has become kind of the signature social event for eastern Jackson county ? it attracts six or seven hundred people every year. And It?s a great recognition program ? plus the proceeds help underwrite the expense of the program. The build out, growth in assets, the YAC certainly, a wonderful legacy for us. I don?t know of any other foundation that does that. Barbara was instrumental in YAC and also in the Free Health Clinic. She had this habit of tapping on my door and saying ?Do you have a minute?? She had the idea of tackling the Free Health Clinic ? and we finally got Dr. Bridget McCandless and Dr. Dan Perdum ? he helped us with a lot of the start up. He?s the senior medical director for Samuel Rogers. Now the FHC has gone off to do wonderful thing. We?ve been able to meet the needs of the community well. There?s the needs assessment program. We go out into the community and call a community meeting ? send out invitations to a bunch of people and let them tell us what they think are the most pressing needs in the community 0 that can be fixed with the charitable dollar (not gov). Our grants don?t go to individuals, they go to nonprofits who then carry out their own mission. We hired a professional facilitator who came in with some questions we designed and would take them through an input session. We would then use that to inform our grant making. The biggest problem was homelessness ? so we started donating to Hillcrest. They have a 90 day program to get people on their feet. When the graduate, they have the means to maintain themselves. That shows the link between the needs and the community, and linking the charitable needs with the charitable interest. We still do that ? I think Phil might be working on that. Then there was ?Behind the Scenes? where we?d highlight an organization for donors to learn about. We had our share of problems, but nothing that we didn?t overcome. Everybody?s always trying to get the money the need, but we had such a wonderful staff and such a tremendous board. The board was always together ? there was a lot of mutual respect and camaraderie. I know some organizations can be destroyed when boards split into factions and create rifts. The staff, by virtue of low turnover, is obviously great and also finds the work satisfying. I decided to retire because I just had a lot of stuff I wanted to pursue ? grandchildren, books to write.

Roberta Coker Charitable Fund Donate Apart from her own desire to invest in the needs of those throughout her community, Roberta Coker created her personal foundation at THCF when she saw how a single donation could be invested and dispersed to benefit many charities. The opportunity to double the value of her giving combined with the convenience and ease of giving through her fund at THCF made the Community's Foundation an easy choice for her. She is now able to support many charities including Powell Gardens, Quality Hill Playhouse, Community Service League, and Junior Services League through her personal foundation. "With the uncertainties of the economy, having a personal foundation makes sense for our community. When the funds are down, the needs go up. Giving through my fund ensures I can continue my support even during market fluctuations. I am extremely blessed, and we each need to share with others." 30th Anniversary Video Interview: I was chair of the board when in 2009/2010. I served all nine years of my term. YAC and Free Health Clinic had just been put in place when I came on the board. From my background, I think you can?t talk about too many things in 7 minutes - you need to sort out a few salient details. It?s going to have to not focus on too many things.. The programs of the Foundation make the foundation - but the response to our communities is what we?re about. Not only the donors, but the grantees - if the Foundation were not here, where would we be? A lot of nonprofits depend on us - and our DAFs are sizable - one woman gave a million dollars for scholarships. And the growth is remarkable - even in the worst economic climates. Phil can speak to the stability of it - people are willing to give because of how sturdy and grounded the organization is. We give people that confidence. And the merger is so difficult to explain. The piece about the future is important - we need to lobby for the future, so that we?re not 25 & out.

Upon his mother?s death Brent received monetary assets that he used to create the Schondelmeyer- Williams Fund. Jackson County Historical Society, Jackson County Free Health Clinic, and his church are all among the different organizations in which he and his wife support. He is supportive of his community and he believes that the Foundation knows the needs, hopes, and desires of the community. "The Community Foundation is a community of charitable minded individuals. It?s easy to set aside the money and then let it be managed." In addition, Mr. Schondelmeyer considers his fund to be an opportunity to show others in the area his interests. It?s a way to focus his family?s charitable activity, and "THCF is a hub of activities."

Wendy Fitzgerel-Blue Foundation Fund Donate Lenny Blue and his wife Wendy have joined over 30,000 people in the area that have completed the bible-based financial classes from Crown Financial Ministries. Like many others, debt had hit home during these financial uncertainties of the economy. Upon completion of the classes, the couple had learned how to budget their money, reduce their debt and they were able to create savings. A couple of years passed, and the Blue family was excited for the arrival of their daughter, Lilya. Shortly after giving birth, Wendy was diagnosed with cancer. She died last October. Though the Crown Financial classes taught beneficial information for the Blue couple, the most valued information learned was the importance of giving to others. Lenny is now able to help others through the story of his wife?s life and through his personal foundation that was created in her honor. His primary support aides in research for pancreatic cancer awareness, as well as provide financial assistance to children?s dentistry, kids programs, and Cancer Treatment Centers of America.
